Money Saving Tips for Moving

Updated: April 11, 2017

There are a few simple steps that you can take to save money when hiring Fort McMurray Movers to relocate you to a new home. These tips can help you with any Alberta mover.

Get it in Writing

Many Fort McMurray moving companies are fair and honest, but just to be safe, request the estimate in writing by e-mail.  Ask them to be sure to include the rate, travel time or charge, fuel surcharge and any other fees associated with their service.  Also get a written copy of the insurance coverage that is offered with the move.  Is there a deductible? Is there an upfront fee to access this coverage?  Just to be safe you should request written confirmation of the coverage.

Name your budget

If you only have a certain amount set aside for the move, tell your mover!  The movers don’t want to be caught with an unpaid bill, and may have some creative suggestions to keep the cost within your budget.

Pack Yourself

Packing service is likely to cost more than the move.  A mover typically charges the same rate for packing as for moving, but with additional charges for packing supplies.  Packing your own home can be an opportunity to sift through your belongings, and get rid of clutter.

Disassemble any furniture that you are able.  If your desks, bedframes or other furniture needs to be disassembled to fit through the entranceway, do it yourself.  This activity can be time consuming, as your Fort McMurray mover may not be familiar with that particular piece!  If you know that your couch legs must come off, you can do that too!

Don’t book in the high season!

Fort McMurray moving companies often do 70% or more of their annual sales between May and September.  Book your mover between middle of October and middle of April to get the most competitive pricing.

As with any service provider, it is always best to get three estimates before choosing your mover.  Read How to Choose a Calgary Mover for more information on how to choose a reputable moving company.
